Future Integration and development around the area

The masterplan for Tengah was revealed in September 2016, though plans to redevelop the town had been mooted as early as 1991 in a concept plan for Singapore in the future.

As the first "Forest Town", Tengah will see a car-free town centre and lush greenery surrounding the site, which is bounded by the Kranji and Pan-Island expressways, Bukit Batok Road and Brickland Road.

The area, which was largely forest and scrubland, was previously used as a military training ground.

There will be five planned housing districts in Tengah, each with a unique character, the Ministry of National Development had said.

When it is fully developed in two decades, Tengah could comprise 42,000 new homes: 30,000 units of public housing and 12,000 units of private housing. With its location near the upcoming Jurong Innovation District and its car-free town centre, it is expected to grow in popularity.

Future 24km Jurong Region Line (JRL) --- Open in 2026

Jurong Region Line, Singapore's 7th MRT line, to open in three phases from 2026. The residents in Tengah will benefit from the future 24km Jurong Region Line (JRL) in their commute.

The MRT line will have 24 stations and open in three phases starting from 2026. The 24km-line, which will be above ground entirely, will also link up to the North-South Line at Choa Chu Kang and the East-West Line at Boon Lay. It will help develop the Jurong Lake District into the largest commercial hub outside the Central Business District and support the development of the Jurong Innovation District.

The upcoming Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail in Jurong will also offer commuters connections to Malaysia.

According to the official, the JRL "marks a quantum leap" in the development of the Jurong region, which was until the 1950s, mostly swamps, jungles and fishing villages. The region has, however, been built up into an economic and residential centre, with 300,000 residents and 400,000 workers.

The new MRT line will connect to places such as Nanyang Technological University, Jurong Industrial estate, including Jurong Island and the future Jurong Gateway.
